The Cunning Comper
The Cunning Comper: Vol. 2
Said to be a tapestry woven by Master Sanhaj Compore himself. Its content is short and odd, generally taken as a fiction that never happened.
To cheat the miraculous mushroom wine from the Lord of the Crossroads, Compore brought his honest brother Sanhaj and said:
"My brother, your kindness is known throughout the tribe. I know your heart is good—you speak only honest words and do sincere deeds. So, with true heart and kinship, please swear to keep secret what we are about to do."
Sanhaj, not knowing his brother's foul plan, nodded and agreed.
"Then I will tell you my plan—but you must work with me and reveal it to no one:"
So Compore laid out his scheme at length:
"I want you to visit the Lord of the Crossroads and say I am mortally ill, and that you hope for 'Doctor Papa's' prescription to heal your brother. Then I will slip into the hut and steal his mushroom wine. With it we can share more wisdom with the whole tribe and lift more toil."
"Think it over well, good brother. If we had the Crossroads Lord's mushroom wine, how much good would it bring the tribe—and how much especially to us two brothers?"
The younger brother wanted to refuse, but having rashly agreed to his brother's request, he had no choice but to consent to Compore's scheme.
Of course this is only Compore's own account. Why he painted himself as a villain who cheated his brother—true or false? Since he became a tribal hero, few dare dig further.
